Surface characteristics and corrosion behaviour of bare electrogalvanized steel coated with polymer/nano-silicate particles added to the electrogalvanizing bath were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDXS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). After applying a barrier polyurethane paint, the paint hardness, porosity, flexibility, colour, gloss, blistering and rusting degrees, and anticorrosive protective properties in 0.05 mol·L-1 NaCl solution were also evaluated. The results correlated well and, being demonstrative of the very slow deterioration rate of the immersed coated electrogalvanized steel, they enabled to assume that if a chemically analogous but thicker coating system was applied; it could be an acceptable alternative in real service conditions.Fil: Célia R. In order to develop a potential route to fabricate plates and clips for orthopedic applications, a Mg–3.4Dy–0.2Zn–0.4Zr (wt.%) alloy was produced and analyzed in different conditions: solution treated at 525 °C for 3 h, hot rolled and hot rolled and aged at 250 °C. The aging behavior of the rolled alloy was investigated during isothermal aging at 250 °C, and a significant peak was observed at 10 h. The electrochemical behavior was evaluated in 0.9 wt.% NaCl solution at 37 ± 0.5 °C by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The 525 °C-3 h and hot rolled specimens exhibited corrosion rates of 2.0 and 1.7 mm/year, respectively. The hot rolled and aged at 250 °C for 10 h specimen presented a grain size of 11.8 ± 1.7 μm with an intense macrotexture of the basal {0002} plane, hardness of 73 ± 3 HV and higher impedance modulus and obtained the highest corrosion resistance with a corrosion rate of 0.9 mm/year

New Sol-gel Formulations to Increase the Barrier Effect of a Protective Coating Against the Corrosion and Wear of Galvanized Steel

This study proposes a new pretreatment method that uses alkoxide precursors with a plasticizing agent; the purpose of this study is to improve the electrochemical and mechanical properties of a galvanized steel surface. Galvanized steel was covered with a hybrid film obtained from a sol that consisted of two alkoxide precursors, 3 - (trimethoxysilylpropyl) methacrylate (TMSM) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), with nitrate cerium in a concentration of 0.01 M and a polyethylene glycol (PEG) plasticizer. The hybrid coatings were obtained by dip-coating method with various concentrations of plasticizer (0, 20, 40 and 60 g.L-1). The hybrid films were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), profilometry, contact angle measurements, a tribometer with the type-setting ball on the plate and electrochemical tests. The addition of the plasticizer into the hybrid films improves the corrosion resistance behavior compared to the sample without the plasticizer. The addition of 20 g.L-1 of plasticizer showed the best performance in the electrochemical tests. The mechanical behavior results indicated that higher PEG concentrations resulted in films with enhanced durability
